18 Jan My Word for the Year
Hello. I know, it’s been a while.
When I was still in college, I was always looking ahead to the next thing. I was always planning for the next semester, preparing for the next test, or searching for the next roommate. I enjoyed my time in that season of life, but I was always anticipating what was to come next. I couldn’t wait to graduate and get out of there.
I couldn’t wait to do all the things that I said I would do once I graduated. I wanted to learn American Sign Language because my major didn’t accept it as a foreign language credit. I wanted to have time to write all the screenplays and books and stories I could dream up. I wanted to get into a consistent routine that wouldn’t be shaken every semester.
And so when I finally graduated last May, I was ecstatic.
Except it’s January now, and I haven’t done any of these things yet.
I work as a writer and editor now. It’s amazing. I get to do what I love at a place I care so much about. And it was here, talking to new co-workers, that I decided to choose a word for this year.
I’ve never chosen a word for a year. I’ve made halfhearted resolutions to be more organized or live healthier, but these never seem to stick consistently.
I need routine. In college, once I had a routine—like a consistent shift at work, a regular class, or even a standing study session with a friend—it was easy to keep. Except these were usually dictated by whoever set the schedule or when my classes were available. Now, it’s up to me to create a routine.
And I’m discovering I’m not very good at it.
So my word for 2019 is intentional.
I will be intentional about getting into a healthy routine. I will be intentional about my time with family and friends. I will be intentional about doing all the things I said I would once I graduated.
And I will be intentional about my writing.
I will be more intentional with this blog. My goal is to create consistency. My goal is to create interesting and helpful content that you will enjoy reading. I want to share more about how and why I write and what goes into my process. I want to share updates about how my projects are going.
I have a lot of ideas, a lot of planning notes to sift through, and a lot of typing to do. I’ve always said I want to write stories that mean something to people, or even just one person. So in 2019, I will be intentional about my writing. I am a writer, after all.
