24 Aug Odyssey: Summer Wrap-Up
This summer has been full of transition and busy times. I’m adjusting to post-college life, researching different kinds of jobs, and figuring out what exactly is next for me.
I’ve also been continuing to write for Odyssey. Here is my summer wrap-up!
Apparently, June 8th is “National Best Friends Day.” It may not be a scam from card companies to sell more cards (like birthdays, according to Ron Swanson), but it’s definitely not an official holiday. It’s a ploy of social media to get more likes or shares and an excuse to post more pictures from that cute photoshoot. (See also: “National Cheese Day,” “National Donut Day.”)
Owl City fans, or “hootowls,” have learned to be a very patient fandom. There was the “I Hope You Think Of Me” and “Hey Anna” mystery finally solved in 2013, the pushed releases of “All Things Bright and Beautiful” and “The Midsummer Station” and the finally announced “Cinematic” after a year of hiatus following the Adam Young Scores.
I’ve probably walked by the Erin McKenna’s NYC bakery about a small thousand times before realizing they served only gluten free and vegan products. However, these facts are not what stopped me from trying the bakery. I don’t need to go to a gluten free bakery because my wonderful friend Caleigh Stokes makes the most excellent gluten free baked goods. Caleigh is driven, clever, and kind—and totally rocks the pre-“1989” Taylor Swift curls. She has stocked the counters at past birthday parties and school group events with the most dreamy cupcakes that taste so delicious, you wouldn’t know it was gluten free if she didn’t tell you.
Believe me—I’ve done my time as the too-proud-to-ask-questions coffee drinker. I liked looking like I knew what I was talking about at Starbucks or any local coffee shop. I perused the menu confused as heck, but ordered something that sounded like I was a real coffee drinker.
This summer, my family and I went on a week-long vacation to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. We rode the metro, visited some Smithsonian museums and, of course, saw the buildings that house the three branches of government.

Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios “unboxed” on June 30, 2018. My friend and I decided to brave the crowds on opening day. We got to the park around 7 AM only to find out that the park opened around 6 AM. Upon some more scrolling through multiple Disney Annual Passholder Facebook groups, we discovered that people were waiting outside the park as early as 1 AM.
We’ve all been here.

I graduated from college in May. Most people in my life know I have an English degree, but that doesn’t stop them from asking questions like, “So what do you actually plan on doing now?” Truth is, I know what I’m doing, but in a much more real sense, I have no idea what I’m doing. Post-grad life is different. It’s liberating and exciting, but also a bit scary. I have long-term goals in mind, but I’m still taking it a day at a time.
